Why Do People Hate Taking Exams?

There are many different reasons why people dread test and quizzes, but we’ve rounded up some of the most popular ones reported by members of our program.

  • Exams are boring – Let’s face it, sitting in a quiet classroom for two hours, filling in little circles on a Scantron sheet is no one’s idea of a good time.
  • Fear of being judged – Your test grade is merely a function of how prepared you were to take the test, but many people feel that their worth as a student, child, sibling, and even friend will be determined according to their exam grades.
  • Pressure to succeed – This pressure can come from others or from inside ourselves. We all want to do and be our best, especially in school, but we can often be too hard on ourselves for doing poorly on a test when in fact a lot of different things go into determining the final score.
  • Worry about how to study – One of the oldest and most simple exam tips is simply to study. But HOW do you study efficiently? WHEN is the best time for your learning style, and WHERE should you do it?

  1. Skim The Entire Test First – Especially when it’s a time-constrained exam, you might feel pressure to start scribbling your answers as fast as possible, but WAIT! By reading through the entire test, you’ll get a better idea of what knowledge points are being examined. Make a mark next to questions you feel will be more difficult. This will help with time management.
  2. Read All Directions Twice – Now that it’s time to start answering questions, be sure to read the instructions for each problem/section carefully. Then read them again. Sometimes you can lose points for simply not knowing how to format your answer, or because there was a typo in the directions.
  3. Ask For Clarification If You Need It – If, while reading through the directions, you’re confused about how to answer a particular question, don’t be afraid to call over the teacher or proctor. They can’t help you with the answer, but they can make sure that you understand what the question is asking.
  4. Answer The Easy Questions First – Remember those marks you made next to difficult questions? They’ll allow you to go through the entire test, answering the questions about which you feel most confident first. With that out of the way, you’ll know that you have the remainder of the test period to really focus on the hard stuff.
  5. Rely On What You Know – If you’re taking an essay or short answer test, and you’re thrown off by the topic, try to connect it with a topic that you are confident about. “Even if the topic is just tangential to the question, if you can relate the two then find a way to write what you know. The professor will probably assume you got off-track while composing your answer, which is much better than if you prove you don’t have a clue about the actual topic of the question,” explains Primer Magazine.
